Melony Ishola, Head of Programmes, Video Unit at The Punch Nigeria Limited, coordinated a workshop for 12 young female journalists and interns at The PUNCH on reporting women accurately and fairly. The event introduced participants to gender-sensitive journalism, equipping them with the skills to cover women and gender issues without bias and ensure equitable representation in their reporting.

The training evolved into a network tagged “Report Her Right Network”. This is a community of female journalists, comprising PUNCH journalists but intended to expand beyond PUNCH.  The training also presented four senior journalists as mentors to younger journalists, including Juliana Francis, Publisher, Security News Alert, Sarah Ayeku, Broadcast Journalist with TVC Communications and a 2023 FRLP fellow, Lekan Otufodunrin, Executive Director, Media Career Development Network, and Tessy Igomu, Deputy Editor, Punch Weekend, who is also a fellow of the Report Women Network.

As of now, there is a monthly mentor’s hub that takes place on the WhatsApp group platform. Mentees are being saddled with leadership roles as ambassadors, keeping activities and engagement ongoing within the group.  The quarterly training of the mentor is held in September, which focuses on digital journalism training for women reporting on women and girls. The PUNCH Media Foundation has been a collaborator on the facilitation of the training and is also committed to sustaining the project and community of women in the network.
