Media experts inspire Mass Communication students to take charge of career opportunities

Under her Report Women! FRLP Leadership Project, Rasheedat Iliyas, broadcast journalist and Manager, News and Current Affairs, Harmony FM, facilitated a training on career path in journalism and effective social media usage for 100 final year Mass Communication students (63 Females, 37 Males) at the University of Ilorin, Kwara, providing insights into how they can fit into the media industry upon graduation. 

Dare Akogun, an award-winning Climate and Environment journalist with Sobi FM, was one of the facilitators. Dare spoke on “Leveraging Media Fellowships, Trainings, and Social Media Platforms for Self-Development.” Drawing from his experiences as a journalist, he was able to educate the budding journalists about what to expect in the field of practice and be factual in their reportage. Bushra Badmus-Yusuf, Editor and Assistant Chief Correspondent at the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Ilorin, also facilitated a session on “Career Opportunities and Specialized Trainings for Mass Communication Students.” Bushra highlighted each career path in the Print and Broadcast media industry as well as the New Media. She emphasised the need for the students to adhere to professional ethics and guidelines to differentiate themselves from quacks. She encouraged them to take up opportunities in the media industry and take charge of the information space. The Head of Department, Mass Communication, Dr Patrick Udende, alongside some lecturers, was also on ground throughout the training to provide useful insights to the students. 

The leadership project provided the students with the opportunity to engage with industry actors, providing them with insights into how to fit into the media industry after graduation and how to navigate them the opportunities They were also informed on what social media platforms they could leverage for career development and taught how to make use of such platforms to create contents that align with their passion and career path.
