Temitope Obayendo Empowers Female Corps Members Through Investigative Reporting Training

Temitope Obayendo, Online editor at Pharmnews, for her FRLP Leadership project, held a virtual workshop where 8 female Mass Communication corps members were equipped with the skills in developmental and investigative reporting to inspire the next generation of award-winning journalists.

The project enhanced the understanding of the participants on the need for more investigative and developmental stories as a means of exposing ills in our society, thereby bringing about positive change for development. They were also made to understand the difference between investigative stories and other stories, and why they need to uncover the hidden truth in society.

Facilitated by two guest speakers, Lekan Otufodunrin, Executive Director, Media Career Development Network, and Juliana Francis, Publisher, Security News Alert. Otufodunrin addressed the topic “Uncovering the truth: Basics of investigative reporting”, while Francis spoke on “Margins to Mainstream: Telling Underreported Stories with Impact.” Participants were equipped to sharpen their understanding of investigative reporting, exposed to underreported issues requiring their intervention, and introduced to the key qualities of effective investigative and development journalists

To ensure the sustainability of the project, Obayendo launched a YouTube channel and a WhatsApp group, and plans to sustain the training by organising subsequent editions with support from NGOs and other foundations.
