For her FRLP Leadership Project, Jemilat Nasiru, Staff Writer at TheCable, convened a two-day virtual training for 25 undergraduate journalism students (23 females and 2 males) at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State. The sessions introduced participants to core skills in news writing and digital content creation, while encouraging them to produce impactful, audience-centered stories.

Facilitators included Goodness Chibunna, News Editor at TheCable; Tijani Oluwamayowa, Director of Projects at the Cable Newspaper Journalism Foundation (CNJF); and Mansur Ibrahim, Multimedia Manager. They led sessions on Professional Pathways and Newsroom Leadership Development, The Importance of History and Data in Storytelling, and Journalism in the Digital Age: The Role of Social Media, respectively.

During the workshop, participants explored the diverse career opportunities available in modern newsrooms and developed leadership skills essential for editorial roles. They also gained a deeper understanding of how journalists can drive positive social change, inspire development, and build sustainable careers through powerful storytelling.

To ensure sustainability, Nasiru created a medium and WhatsApp mentorship channels tagged “SheReports Network” where she has continued to engage participants. More broadly, she plans to explore institutional partnerships with the University of Ibadan Department of Communication and Language Arts, and journalism departments of other tertiary institutions in Nigeria and TheCable.
