The University of Ilorin awarded Prof. Stella Ifeanyi Smith a BSc in Microbiology in 1986.
She went on to obtain an MSc in Medical Microbiology in 1988, as well as a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology in 1997, both from the University of Lagos.
She received her pre-doctoral training at the Public Health Laboratory at Withington Hospital in Manchester, United Kingdom, and her post-doctoral training at the Technical University Hospital in Dresden and Max von Pettenkofer Institut in Munich, Germany.
Career & Expertise
At the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Prof. Stella Ifeanyi Smith serves as Director (Research), Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Division. She is also a member of numerous international fellowships, including the Nigerian Society of Microbiology, American Society of Microbiology, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, African-German Network of Excellence in Science, List of Productive Scientists, and several others.
She also has professorships at Mountain Top University’s Department of Biological Sciences (2020–present), the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (2020–present), and the University of Lagos as an adjunct senior lecturer (2014 – 2015).
Skills Utilisation
She has conducted research in many scientific domains, including the investigation of clinical and environmental strains of the toxigenic bacterium V. cholerae, which causes an acute diarrheal disease when ingested.
Other research subjects include how to better diagnose and treat gastro-duodenal disorders, hazards associated with floods to vulnerable populations, and many more.
