Career & Expertise
Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar is a trailblazer in Nigeria’s judiciary, renowned for breaking numerous barriers in a traditionally male-dominated profession. She made history as the first female magistrate in Northern Nigeria, holding the post between 1969 and 1973. Her legal journey continued with her appointment as the Chief Registrar of the Kano State Judiciary, before being appointed as a judge of the Kano State High Court in 1977, at the remarkably young age of 32. This achievement made her the third female judge in Nigeria’s history and the youngest judge in the country.
Her remarkable expertise and judicial acumen led to her elevation to the Court of Appeal in 1987, where she served for an impressive 17 years, including 12 years as President. In 2005, she was promoted to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, further solidifying her reputation as a legal luminary.
In 2012, Justice Mukhtar reached the pinnacle of her career when she was appointed as the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria.
