Okonjo-Iweala earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Harvard University in 1976, followed by a Master’s in City Planning (1978) and a Ph.D. in Regional Economics and Development (1981) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Career & Expertise

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, taking office in March 2021 as the first woman and first African to hold the position. With over 40 years of global experience in finance and development, she previously served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister and Managing Director of the World Bank. Notably, she led negotiations that resulted in the cancellation of $30 billion of Nigeria’s debt and implemented reforms to improve government transparency.

A strong advocate for trade as a tool for poverty reduction, Okonjo-Iweala has been recognised by Forbes and TIME as one of the most powerful and influential people. She also co-chairs global initiatives on climate and economic policy and holds degrees from Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
