She attended primary school in Kaduna and Maiduguri, Nigeria, and later went to the Buchan School on the Isle of Man. In 1989, she continued her education at Henley Management College.
Career & Expertise
Amina Mohammed is the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group. She began her career designing schools and clinics in Nigeria, advocating for greater access to education and social services. She later served as an adviser to four Nigerian Presidents on poverty reduction, public sector reform, and sustainable development.
Before her current role at the UN, Mohammed was Nigeria’s Minister of Environment from 2015 to 2016, where she championed climate action and environmental protection. In 2012, she joined the UN as Special Adviser to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, playing a key role in shaping the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the creation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
She is the founder and CEO of the Center for Development Policy Solutions and has served on various international advisory boards, including the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and as Chair of UNESCO’s Global Monitoring Report on Education Advisory Board.
