Doyin Abiola earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Drama from the University of Ibadan in 1969. She later obtained a Master’s degree in Journalism and a PhD in Communications and Political Science from New York University in 1979. She is also an Eisenhower Fellow (1986).
Career & Expertise
Doyin Abiola became the first Nigerian woman to serve as Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of a daily newspaper, National Concord, in 1986. Her career began at Daily Sketch and Daily Times, where she quickly rose through the ranks due to her keen editorial insight and leadership.
She was instrumental in shaping National Concord and led the publication for over three decades. Beyond the newsroom, Abiola contributed to media ethics and development through her roles on several advisory boards and as a chairperson of media award panels.
In recognition of her contributions, Abiola has received several accolades, including the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) Lifetime Achievement Award. She was also the first woman to receive the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) Lifetime Award for Journalistic Excellence, further solidifying her legacy as a leading figure in Nigerian media.
