WikkiTimes reporters receive gender mainstreaming training

Reporters from WikkiTimes, a newspaper based in Bauchi, were trained on achieving gender balance in their reporting by Victoria Bamas of the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR). This training was part of her participation in the 2023 Report Women! Female Reporters Leadership Programme (FRLP) Champion building edition.

The event took place virtually on Sunday, July 9, 2023. Its theme was “Institutionalising gender mainstreaming in newsrooms,” centred on raising awareness and developing policies for gender mainstreaming in newsrooms. She said the news media promoting gender perspective in their news reporting can actively contribute to eliminating gender barriers and promoting rights and opportunities for all individuals.

Haruna Muhammed, Publisher/CEO, WikkiTimes, was engaged as a resource person. Haruna said as an accountability platform, the newspaper considers gender balance in all its activities and the recruitment of staff. He described women as essential for societal development as he promised to uphold the principle of gender balance and mainstreaming within his sphere of influence.

Courtesy of the training, WikkiTimes staff understood gender mainstreaming in their news report. At the organisational level, the management formulated a gender mainstreaming policy with staff involvement.
